What a great evening! Zhenzhen was the Toastmaster and led us through a meeting full of energy and fun with the theme “Home”.
We had 3 prepared speeches, starting with Elena delivering her first speech – called the ice breaker speech in the Competent Communication (“CC”) manual. She shared with us her adventures in China, Korea and London looking for the purpose of life. She loves challenges and enjoys experiencing different culture and meeting friends from all walks of life. Joining Toastmaster is another audacious move to stretch herself.
The second speech was from Esmé with speech #5 in the CC manual “Rhetorical Devices”. In her speech, Esmé explained to us what rhetorical devices are and the three common techniques we use to make a speech more impactful; comparison to help the audience visualise; using words which are music to the ear and humour. I can’t wait to use some of the techniques for my next speech.
The last speech was given by Marianna with her 2nd speech from the CC manual. The title of the speech is “Life as Sea”. Marianna told us that she thinks life is like the sea – we truly enjoy it when it is calm, sunny and beautiful; but when it becomes choppy with winds blowing and clouds gathering above, she challenged us to not always look for shelter to protect ourselves and hence stay back, but to be audacious and battle it with the company of the right ship and crew.
Thank you to Dani for leading us through a fun table topics session (impromptu speaking) during the second half of the evening. She set challenges for our speakers to sell modern appliances to people living in 18th century.
Our evaluators were myself, Maria, Esmé and Rochelle.Thank you all! Special thanks to our GE evaluator Emily Cheah from db Toastmaster club.
A big thank you to those who have taken two roles in the meeting – they are Dani as Table topics Master and Timekeeper; Esmé as Speaker and Speech Evaluator; and Marianna as Speaker and Grammarian with the word of the day Audacious.
The Best Speaker and Best Evaluator went to Esmé, and Best Table Topics speaker was awarded to Rochelle.
As always, we had several guests includingTheresa, Simonetta and Emily; we hope you enjoyed our club meeting and that we can welcome you again soon!
