What a fun evening, led by the Toastmaster of the meeting, Jane.
We had 3 prepared speeches. Our first speaker, Shola delivered an advanced speech, from the successful club series called “Meeting Roles and Responsibilities”. She introduced all the roles needed to successfully run a Toastmasters meeting as well as the committee roles for ensuring the club continues to grow and support its members. It gave us a good overview of what happens behind the scenes.
The second speech was from Angie with her fourth speech from the Competent Communicator manual entitled “The Secret of Communication”. It was an interactive session where Angie used a Q&A style to explain how people’s personalities, divided in four colours (yellow, red, green and blue), impact the way we communicate and how they are perceived by others. There certainly was a lot of nodding in the room.
Our third speaker for the evening was Carrie, who bravely started her Pathways journey by doing her icebreaker speech “Give me a Chance”. Catching us by surprise, Carrie personalized Pathways, put herself in the shoes of Pathways and gave a convincing speech on how Pathways is worth giving a go and how it offers many benefits by being a modern and online tool to guide us through the Toastmasters journey as we develop our speaking and leadership skills.
Thank you to Ailsa for leading us through a fun (and absurd) table topics session (impromptu speaking) during the second half of the evening. She asked speakers to stand for election in various “absurd” roles, such as President of Utopia, Treasurer for the Billionaires Club Benevolent Fund, Minister of Education in the animal kingdom and PR officer for Introverted Recluses and Secretary for Procrastination International. NB: these roles mirror the committee roles and as such, this was a timely and topical theme because we are asking members to stand for election to the next committee.
Our evaluators were Esmé, Maria, Ellen, and Dani. Thank you also to our grammarian, Sim for providing the word of the day Absurd, and to our timekeeper Emma. Emma recently joined our club and it was her first time taken on a Toastmasters role. Welcome, Emma and well done!
The Best Speaker went to Carrie, Best Evaluator to Dani, and Best Table Topicsspeaker was awarded to Marianna.
Carrie was also awarded a Pathways Badge as she was one of the first three members of our club embarking on Pathways – congratulations Carrie!
As always, we had several guests in the meeting (Christina, May, Nefateri, Paulina, and Sin); we hope you enjoyed our club meeting and that we can welcome you again soon, either as a guest or as a new member!
