With International Women’s Day just around the corner, our Toastmaster for the evening, Veronica, chose a theme of Strong Women. She asked each of our 4 prepared speakers, the evaluators and functionaries “Who are the strong women in your life? How have they impacted you?” We received a variety of responses ranging from a Bollywood super-fan therapist mum to Aunt Betty to a dog-walking fierce headmistress!
By sheer coincidence, there was a theme of strength running through the speeches this evening too, starting with Kiran delivering “On Wednesdays, We Wear Pink” paying homage to the Mean Girls movie as a way of describing 3 different leadership styles & using strong women characters from the movie as examples. Next up, Anastasia showed strength and humour in My Way or His Way as she described 5 negotiation techniques she employed while navigating Valentine’s Day with her boyfriend of just under a year.
Challenging us to challenge the status quo, something that requires significant strength (thank you to the women who have risked ridicule, punishment and imprisonment by doing this over the years and have fought for our right to vote, our right to have equal pay, equal rights etc) was our 3rd speaker, Veronica who told us of the reasons why we conform to the norms but she encouraged us to have the courage to question “why – why do we conform?”.
The last of our prepared speeches was by Emma, sternly checking up on our progress towards achieving New Year’s Resolutions and offering up 3 tips to keep us on track.
With no prior collaboration on the meeting theme, our Table Topics Master was bang on target as her 4 questions were inspired by a sample of the strong women referenced in A History of the World in 21 Women which Barbora is currently reading. Three guests and I were given thought provoking (& quite tough) questions comparing the achievements/challenges faced by Clara Schumann, Artemisia Gentileschi, Golda Meir and Madonna to the modern-day women.
The prepared speeches were evaluated by Sin, Aga, Lynn & Katie and Ailsa evaluated the Table Topics. Georgina was our Timer and our Grammarian, JT spiced things up with a “Woman of the Day” Elizabeth I rather than a “Word of the Day”.
Best Speaker: Veronica
Best Table Topic: Phil B (a guest)
